Date1911DescriptionGerman migrant, Henry Dreis, ran a successful vineyard in Fairfield. Growing Muscat Hamburg, Muscat Alexander, White Sherry and White Wax grape varieties, Mr Dreis harvested seven tonnes of high quality grapes per acre at a time where the annual average return was one and a half tonnes per acre. In 1923 the local newspaper reported that:

‘The vineyard of Mr H dries was entered and twelve cases of grapes stolen. The thieves worked silently and quickly, and their depredations were not discovered until the following morning. Mr Dreis has now employed a nightwatchman, who will probably use a shooting stick if occasion demands it.’
