DescriptionCabramatta's multicultural history goes back long before the first contact between Aboriginal and Europeans, and most Cabramatta residents speak more than one language. Toda Cabramatta's commercial Centre particularly reflects the arrival of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the late 1970s. In Freedom Plaza an ornamental gateway, or Pai Lau, has been built as a positive symbol of freedom and multiculturalism. Bold letters spell out "Liberty" and "Democracy" in Chinese, Vietnamese, English, Khmer and Lao.Date2001Transcripts availableNoRightsFairfield City CouncilAccess conditionsAccess open for research, written permission required for personal copies and public useNotes"Tune into Fairfield City- A Multicultural Driving tour" was launched in 2001 as a joint initiative between the NSW Heritage Group, NSW Premier's Department and Fairfield City Council.
