Culture & Cultivation: Backyards in Fairfield provides a rare opportunity to look over the fence into the backyards of 17 families living in our City. Backyard objects, plants, stories, and films and photographs created by local artists explore migrant stories and how they transplant and maintain their cultural and gardening traditions in Fairfield.
The exhibition provides a fascinating picture of backyard creative endeavours, including growing unusual plants, building backyard museums and sculpture gardens, baking food in outdoor ovens, producing wine, and bottling preserves and herbal remedies.
Cultivation and creativity are common to cultures from all around the world and this important exhibition brings together residents from diverse cultures: Australian, Assyrian, Cambodian, Croatian, Cuban, English, German, Greek, Italian, Maltese, Samoan, and Uruguayan... the selection here illustrates and celebrates the extraordinary diversity of cultures and creativity in the Fairfield community.
