Ettinger Family

Main

SummaryThe Ettinger family lived at Cardwell Street, Canley Vale in a house named Niederwald. The Ettinger home has been restored and is located on the corner of Sackville and Cardwell.

Philipp Ettinger (Senior) was one of the principal winemakers in the area and one of many German migrants who settled in the district in the late 1800s. He originally came to Australia seeking gold.

The Ettinger family owned a farm near the junction of Orphan School Creek and Prospect Creek. The farm was primarily a vineyard and orchard. Fairfield City Council Depot and Avenal Park now occupy the land where the vineyard once was.

BiographyPhilipp Ettinger (Senior) and his wife Elizabeth first arrived in Australia in 1855 from Winkel in Germany on the Peru. Intending to grow grapes, the lure of gold mining was too tempting and they went instead to the gold fields which were flourishing at Hill End. Between 1856 and 1870 the Ettingers had added a family of 11 children. Philipp however subsequently became ill and the whole family was forced to return to Germany. They had little luck whilst in the goldfields and ironically they sold their mine to another German, Bernhardt Holtermann, who a few days later would find the huge Holtermann nugget.

Philipp Ettinger and his family returned to Australia in 1880 and settled initially in Old Guildford where they had a vineyard known as Thorngrove. They moved to Canley Vale in 1880 when the Water Board installed its main water supply pipeline through his vineyards. There they built a home which they named Neiderwald on the banks of Orphan School Creek but is now known as Ettinger House. It is located at 214 Sackville Street Canley Vale and the track that can be seen in the photograph is now a busy Sackville Street.

Philipp planted a vineyard there and made wine. His wines won him numerous awards. The family still has an award won by Philipp for table grapes from the Agricultural Department of the colony of NSW in 1892. He died in 1906 and later the house was granted heritage status
