Date1982DescriptionThe Russian Orthodox Parish at Cabramatta was formed in 1949 by a small group of Russian immigrants, many of whom were White Russians who had fled after the 1917 Revolution and later resettled in Australia from Harbin, China, during the 1960s. In 1953, the congregation enlisted Russian architect Michael Miklashevky to design a new church in the traditional Russian style.

Construction was completed in the 1960s, and the church was officially opened on 1 February 1969 by Bishop Konstantin. With its gold onion-shaped dome and cross rising to 110 feet (33.5 metres), the church quickly became a prominent landmark in Cabramatta. Its architecture reflects ancient Russian and Byzantine influences, featuring two side galleries and a large choir loft above the entrance. Designed to hold up to 600 worshippers, the church served as both a spiritual home and cultural centre for the Russian Orthodox community.

In 1981, Father Alexis and artist Tonia Ganin began the painstaking task of covering the entire interior with traditional iconography, further enriching the church’s spiritual and artistic significance. Today, the Protection of the Holy Virgin Church remains central to the life of the Russian Orthodox community in Sydney’s southwest.Geolocation^[1]136 John Street, Cabramatta
