Collection SummaryCanley Vale Tutorial Centre has been heritage listed in Fairfield City Council's Local Environmental Plan.DescriptionSTATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
Constructed in 1893, Canley Vale Tutorial Centre is historically significant because it provides important evidence of the development of the public school in the locality and was the first permanent building associated with the school. It is considered to be one of the oldest residential buildings at Canley Vale. The building, designed for the teacher’s residence at Canley Vale Public School, is associated with the architectural branch of the Council of Education under the leadership of William Kemp. It is a representative example of a late 19th century teacher’s residence, demonstrating many of the characteristics of residential architecture from the last two decades of the nineteenth century and, despite modifications and additions has retained a relatively high level of integrity in terms of planning and overall form.
The building may have social significance because of its associations with Canley Vale Public School and to staff of the Canley Vale Tutorial Centre, along with, students and the families of students who have attended the Centre. Further investigation needs to be undertaken.
