Fairfield Leisure Centre (formerly Fairfield City Leisure Centre)
Main
DescriptionThe leisure centre was officially opened by the then Minister of Leisure, Sport and Tourism, Michael Cleary, on Saturday 23rd April 1983. The NSW Volleyball Association also conducted its State League Competition on the day.
The $1.1 million complex was the culmination of four years of planning. The leisure centre became located next to the then Harold Schofield Swimming Pool / Fairfield Swimming Pool and is located opposite Fairfield Park. Fairfield City Council provided $550,000 towards the project, Fairfield RSL Club contributed $250,000 and the balance was from a grant from the Department of Leisure, Sport and Tourism.
The facility also used to house the Fairfield City RSL Youth Club. The Fairfield City RSL Youth Club was seeking a larger and better equipped venue to expand its activities.
The original idea for the leisure centre came from an adult interest survey conducted by students at Milperra College of Advanced Education in 1979. The 2000 residents surveyed indicated a need for a multi-purpose leisure centre for adult and youth activities. Fairfield City Council, with the co-operation of the Department of Leisure, Sport and Tourism, conducted three more surveys as part of a leisure needs study.
A competition was held to create the first logo of the Fairfield Leisure Centre which attracted over 250 entries. Melissa Rowlings won first prize.
