Details
Provenance and SignificanceSymons Bros Tile Works was established in 1895 by two brothers at the end of Wilga Street, Fairfield. With clay deposits between Taylor Street and the banks of Orphan School Creek, the business expanded quickly with kilns able to process 120,000 tiles.
This painting has good documentary and interpretive value in recording the site of a significant local industry. It also complements a watercolour of the same scene by the artist's wife Evelyn Armstrong (now Healy), an accomplished artist who also painted commercially under the name of Lyn Lavelle.
The Armstrongs were founding members of the Cabramatta and District Art Society.
