DescriptionThis interview consists of one audio recording and transcript. Angelo Lual was interviewed on 10 June 2010 at the Whitlam Library, Cabramatta by Shirley Kingsford McLeod. Interview SummaryAngelo Lual was born in 1967 at Bahr al Ghazal, Wau, in what is now South Sudan. His village was poor and their housing was made of mud and grass. It was a small village and the local language was Dinka. Later he learnt English and Arabic.
Angelo began school at the age of 5 and was educated up to the age of 18. On leaving school he was employed working for Pepsi Cola as a process worker. He also studied religion as he was a devout Catholic.
When the Civil War broke out in Sudan, work was most difficult to find. Angelo chose to leave Sudan and fled to a refugee camp in Egypt. He reached Egypt by train and lived there for two and a half years. Angelo’s father, who was a farmer, died in 1983 and his mother in 2007 after Angelo had arrived in Australia.
Angelo applied to leave Egypt as a refugee but had no choice as to what country he would be sent to. He finally was sent to Australia in 2004 and his two sons followed in 2008. His wife, however, was forced to remain in Egypt. At the time of this interview Angelo was in the process of bringing her to Australia.
After he arrived in Sydney, Angelo was given housing and also provided with work at a boat building company in Silverwater. There Angelo suffered discrimination, which he speaks about in the interview. His children arrived from Egypt on 20 October 2008 and at this time are receiving Catholic education.
