Datec1870-1873DescriptionThis is a photograph looking through a gateway of a wooden fence at a man standing holding on to a light coloured horse. There is a house on the the right hand side that has a lady leaning up against the verandah post. There are 2 carts in the yard with a boy standing on one of them and some other children standing near the house. There is also an man holding on to what appears to be a hand pushed plough on the left side in front of the other cart.NotesWilliam and Eliza Stimson arrived in Australia from England as young newlyweds. They amassed a significant fortune, mainly through the timber industry and successful property speculation. They had ten children and , apart from William's own involvement in local politics, most of the children contributed to the indelible impression that the Stimson family made on the development of Fairfield up to the late 1930s. This photograph shows members of William and Eliza's family at Cherry Grove, Old Guildford (cnr of the now Woodville Rd and Fairfield St). The family lived here before Cambridge House was built c.1878. William's son Walter later lived at Cherry Grove which was a working orchard.
