Date26/08/1957DescriptionImage shows the John Street frontage of the new Cabramatta branch of the Commonwealth Bank.
The bank was officially opened on Tuesday evening, August 6 1957 and attended by approx. 150 people. Mr George Maidment made the welcoming speech. The Mayor, Ald. Les Powell officially opened the Commonwealth Trading and Saving Bank.
What makes the Cabramatta branch remarkable was the fact that this was to be the first branch and premise owned by the Bank.
Prior to WWI, the Commonwealth Bank was known as the Government Saving Bank and had an agency in Cabramatta. In 1948, the Bank transferred from the Post Office to the building on Cabramatta Rd which was run by the late manager Les Smith.
