DescriptionThis interview consists of one audio recording and transcript. Stanley Anderson was interviewed on 13 December 2007 by Shirley Kingsford McLeod. Interview SummaryStanley was born in 1937 in Sydney. His family lived in Leichhardt before moving to Padstow in 1946. Stanley lived there until he married his wife, Barbara, when he moved to Smithfield.
Stanley went to Leichhardt Primary School followed by Revesby Primary School. He then attended Tempe Boys High School and left with the Intermediate Certificate at the age of 14. Stanley then began an apprenticeship at a machinist shop. He also went to Belmore Tech College and joined the RAAF. He worked at Garden Island.
Stanley joined the Police Force. Upon finishing his training he was posted to Redfern Police Station before moving to Merrylands Police Station. He later moved again to Fairfield Police Station and Redfern.
The interview discusses some of the issues Stanley faced as a policeman, including low wages, violence, bikie gangs and the introduction of female police officers.
Stanley has two sons, Scott and Robin. He is also distantly related to Ned Kelly.
Smithfield gained its first mounted constable in 1874. They patrolled Smithfield and Fairfield.
After WWII the Smithfield station closed and Fairfield station covered the area and was assigned it's first officer in 1903. the station was moved from Ware Street to Hamilton Street in 1919. in 1948 it was again moved to Smart Street and officially opened in 1953.
