This is a collection of 24 black and white photographs showing scenes from 'Shakin' the Blues' revue performed at the Fairfield School of Arts in 1957. Some of the performers were Ian Wearne, Dave Sloane, Betty Warwick, Wendy Bowie, Wendy Douglas, Rosemary Jones, Barbara Turnbull, Hal Smith, Jill Springthorpe, Bill Cronshow, Di Norris and Brian Watkins. The School of Arts, Fairfield formed the centre of Fairfield's social activities from the turn of the century when it was built. A major feature is the Betty Warwick Theatre, named after Betty Warwick, one of Fairfield's most celebrated theatrical personalities. The (Fairfield) Players, an amateur theatrical company, was formed in 1928 by Doreen Clarke, Ted White and Ernest Ashe. The Company performed three of four well known plays each year, and during the Depression, organised many charity performances and concerts featuring local artists. The Players disbanded at the onset of World War II but reformed in 1948 under the direction of Doreen Clarke, Betty Warwick, David Sloane and Ted White. Soon a series of plays and revues were being staged in the Fairfield School of Arts. During the sixties, the Players built up their numbers but in 1971 the group found itself homeless and for several years performed in local Church Halls or in private homes. In 1978 the Players moved to the Bossley Park Progress Hall and with assistance from the Fringe Theatre Committee were able to conduct several workshops on play writing and production techniques. As a contribution to the 1981 Fairfield City Festival, the group wrote and produced 'Small Beginnings', a play based on Smithfield in the 1840s.
