William Bennett was born about 1845 and was probably the son of John and Mary Bennett. He lived at St Johns Park Canley Vale. At the meeting of the Canley Vale Progress Association in January 1904 he was ‘selected to contest Canley Vale against all comers.’39 He was elected with 35 votes out of a possible 47. At his first council meeting he nominated Alderman Zani, the president of the Canley Vale Progress Association, to be mayor for the following year and Alderman Zani was elected. He apologised for his absence from a council meeting in July, as he was ‘indisposed’.

When the argument about the election of Alderman Baglee as mayor arose, he objected to the minutes of the previous meeting saying, ‘How can you say, Mr Winks, that three voted for Alderman Baglee? It’s a lie, as big a lie as many things said here’. He continued to be involved in the ensuring argument, which included personal invective. He did not attend the following meeting, which was to be led by Mayor Baglee.He nominated for the 1908 elections, but was fifth on a list of five candidates for the three places. He died aged 89, in Liverpool on 23 October 1935, being ‘late of St Johns Park Canley Vale.
