Albert, the second son, started a mill in Fairfield around 1916. Fred and Wilson went into business together but dissolved their partnership in 1922. Fred passed away on the 20th October 1949, after a short illness.
The Hirst Brothers owned two sawmills, one at Fairfield and the other at Cabramatta.
The Fairfield timber mill in Smithfield Street (Court Road) is now the site of the courthouse while the Cabramatta site is now occupied by Woolworths. The sawmill on Railway Parade, Cabramatta operated for more than 60 years.
