Lillian Mabel Stubbs was interviewed on 22 September 2003 at the Whitlam Library, Cabramatta by Shirley McLeod.Interview SummaryLillian Mabel Stubbs was born on the 25th August 1922. She is known by her second name of Mabel. Her father was Frederick Benjamin Semple and her mother was Amy Louise Lang. Mabel was born in a house where her mother was attended by a midwife. Sadly her mother passed away when Mabel was 14 and her father was left to bring up 4 children alone.
Mabel’s schooling was firstly at Fairfield Public School and later at Liverpool Domestic Science School. She and her husband married at St Barnabas Church in Fairfield after a 4 year courtship. They had 3 children together.
Mabel’s interview gives a vivid picture of the Fairfield of her lifetime. She tells in detail of the schools, shops, churches and businesses of the city. She also tells us of the many tradesmen who called at her house such as the ice man and clothes prop man. Mabel spent much of her leisure time dancing, playing tennis and attending the movies and shares with us many memories of World War Two. She also describes some of the professional people such as doctors, chemists and dentists as well as the ‘personalities’ of the area.
She has lived in the Fairfield area most of her life and has done much voluntary work especially for the Red Cross. For her services to the Red Cross and other organisations she was awarded an Order of Australia in 1995.
