"Jing Yee was the first lion dancing group I spent time with. Led by John and Elvis, they started training in carparks and garages, creating a space where tradition and community thrive.
Spending time with them revealed something essential about lion dancing: family.
Jing Yee’s training sessions buzzed with energy, rows of lion heads lining the warehouse walls, watching over the dancers. After practice, they invited me to share a meal — a gesture that spoke of their generosity and inclusivity.
I followed them across various events, from festivals, to birthdays and a funeral. Each performance carried its own weight and meaning, a blend of ritual and celebration that brought people together.
My time with Jing Yee revealed the profound role lion dancing plays in people’s lives. From birth to death, it’s woven into their stories, a constant thread of support, growth, and joy shared among a family that extends far beyond blood."
