"Given the keys to the Mingyue Lay Buddhist temple at the age of eighteen, Kelvin had the responsibility to build a lion dancing community from scratch. Deeply rooted in Chinese lion dancing traditions, the team boldly embraced modern interpretations, carving out a style that’s uniquely their own.
In their early days, Qing Fong faced criticism for straying from convention. But over time, they have become one of Fairfield’s most prominent lion dancing groups with goals of attending international competitive events.
The training sessions started with general fitness and cardio. Their drills and exercises were split with dedicated rest times like a gym workout. Yet amidst the rigor, there were moments of levity. I captured genuine smiles and bursts of laughter exchanged between friends, a camaraderie that binds the group and fuels their drive.
This mutual respect and joy were especially evident when one of the team members showcased her drumming technique and her skills were met with encouragement and admiration.
Qing Fong utilizes social media to its fullest, showing that it’s not only about preserving tradition but about reimagining it. Their energy is palpable — proof that passion and dedication can shape not only a performance but an enduring legacy."
