DescriptionThis interview consists of one audio recording and transcript. Trevor Argall was interviewed on 10 September 2007 at the Whitlam Library, Cabramatta by Marilyn Gallo. Interview SummaryTrevor Argal was born at Lidcombe in 1937. His father had migrated from America in 1912 and after marriage he and Trevor’s mother moved to Smithfield where they bought a property near the Smithfield Park and raised a family.
Trevor’s schooling was at Fairfield Public School which he attended from 1942 to 1948. His secondary school was Granville Boys’ High where he remained for another three years. On leaving school he attended Granville Technical College and trained as a sheet metal worker.
Trevor tells of the love of a fine garden that the headmaster at the primary school had and that the pupils had a share in its upkeep. He also tells of travelling to Granville on the ‘Spec’ (Special) train daily for High School and later for Technical College.
He worked in the metal trade for a few years but left after about 6 years to take up a position selling insurances. He remained at that vocation for 3 to 4 years and then, as he had been breeding birds at home, purchased a pet shop in Arthur Street Cabramatta. In 1975 he sold out and moved to Forster where he still lives although retaining a keen interest in the Fairfield City area where he and his wife Beverley lived for years.
He has fond memories about his life on the farm at Smithfield. His father grew vegetables there but also worked at the Blue Metal Quarry at Prospect. Later they moved to Sackville Street, Fairfield.
Trevor had an interest in sport and played tennis and cricket in the district. As a youth he attended movies at the Crescent Theatre and also the wresting that was often held in Fairfield.
