Waiting at the lights to cross the road, the smell of fresh baked goods wafts out onto the street, drawing you in. Elderly women with trolleys and sun hats line up outside the door, a daily ritual. Inside, Rowena greets you with a warm, infectious smile. This has become my number one stop on my weekly wanderings around Cabramatta while shooting for this project. A sausage bun to snack on now, a taro sponge cake wrapped carefully for later.
Rowena runs the bakery alongside her two brothers, Jeff and Jackie. Jeff is usually out the back creating custom cakes, while Jackie keeps things moving in the bakery. Jeff once invited me in to watch him work, and I was blown away by his speed and skill. With simple tools and an airbrush, he creates edible art in minutes. Their parents bought the bakery in 1997 after immigrating from Vietnam in 1992, working tirelessly to build the business that still thrives today. Jeff learned to make cakes from his father as a child in Vietnam and continued honing his craft as a teenager in Cabramatta, following in his father’s footsteps. Everything about this bakery evokes joy: the smells, the colours, the overlap of conversations as Rowena answers their busy phone for custom cake orders and chats with regulars in the store. She knows many customers by name, having watched some grow from children into parents themselves. A-One Cake Shop is a neighbourhood icon and a beautiful example of how this community flourishes through creativity, hard work and kindness. I love it here.
